State Assessments
Students in 3rd and 4th grade will be taking the M-Step state assessment beginning this week. Parents often ask how they can help prepare their child/children for what may be an anxious experience. The first thing to remember and to remind your child/children is to do their best. Their schooling has been preparing them for this, so they are just going to be showing what they already know!
The second thing to do is to help your child/children physically by making sure they are getting the amount of sleep that they need and the proper nutrition, especially protein, fruits, and vegetables. Students who have gotten a sufficient night's sleep and have been fed, are likely to be more focused and able to provide their best effort.
The third thing you can do is teach them how to use relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, to help them center themselves and remain calm. Lastly, anxiety can also be helped by giving your child/children something to look forward to. For example, if they try their very best on the assessment, maybe that night the family takes a trip to the park or does some other fun activity.
Together, we can make this a positive experience for your child/children and you. I also want to thank you for the support that you give your child/children. Your love is the most important thing they can every receive.
